I bought the 3M adhesive, but only used it at the junction between the new seal, and the existing "over the top" flat poptop seal. I was advised (by the list) that the new seals with aluminum clips built in (I got mine from Calif. imports) don't need sealant. It's now 7 years later, and the 3M sealant has long since given way, but the new seal is holding fine. To be fair, the sealant probably has a hard time sticking to the old worn out flat seal. But since it took me hours to clean off the old crud (the PO used duct tape...), I'd avoid using any sealant unless absolutely necessary...
