I had this problem on my 85 Jeep Wagoneer Ltd. I had about a year of use on Goodyear tires and started having trouble. Tread looked new, but after a lot of frustration I discovered that in fact the tread surface of the tires was not even. This was not uneveness caused by wear, but if I got down close and looked across the curve of the tread in direction the tire rolled, I could see the uneveness in the tread. It was up and down un-eveness. The tire was not out of balance in any way, but the surface of the tire was up and down. It seems that sometimes in steel belted radials the belts can move, and when they do, this creates irregularities in the surface, sort of like an earthquake re-arranging the mountains, raising them in one place and lowering them somewhere else. This seemed to occur when the tires would get hot from a hard run.. The high spots and low spots were different everytime, and that is what made it so hard to hunt down. Finally replaced the tires, even though they were like new, and that solved the problem.

Regards,

John Rodgers 88 GL driver
