I'm not sure about Passenger model Vanagons, but Westfalia Camper models I've looked at have this and for (I guess) the following reasons:

1. The earlier date is when the basic vehicle is manufactured at Hannover, before delivering it to Westfalia for the camping interior installation.

2. The second (or later) date is when Westfalia finished it's work on the camping interior and delivered it back to Volkswagen for delivery to whatever market it was headed to.

My 84 Westy has two dates - 12/83 and 1/84 on it's placard. For the camper stuff production (cabinets, stove, fridge, etc.,), I use the later date and/or the Westfalia Serial Number on the plate affixed to the Bed/Seat Box. When I want Vanagon-specific items (engine, trans, front axle, running gear, etc.,), I use the earlier date and/or the VIN.

When I look at the door jam, it has a metal placard that has some dates. Why does it have multiple dates? At the top next to West Germany it has 6/84

5/84

Then at the bottom is shows 5/84 again.

What do these 3 dates mean? Why isn't there just 1 date of when it was manufactured?
