They came out to make the engine easier to turn over when I did valve adjustments -- every 6,000 miles on the VW, and every 15,000 on the Civic. That gave me an opportunity to look them over and see if they needed replacing. When the center electrodes started to get worn down and rounded off, I'd replace the plugs. My Vanagon doesn't have spark plugs. ;)
