I feel that the Vanagon is a great family hauler. Growing up in the late 60's early 70's, I remember many local trips riding way in the back of my dad's baywindow buses next to the spare tire. We always wore our seatbelts if we were up front, or on the Interstate, but most of our driving was on 2 lane highways and country roads of Southeastern Ohio. Back then half the time my little league baseball team would go to away games in the back of an open pickup truck. Life was slower then, and we know more about safety now, so I do agree that everyone should wear their belts. I have seen accidents go both ways as far as safety belts helping or hurting. But ever since I have had my license I have always used my seatbelt, and my kids all know that the car doesn't go unless they are buckled up. But I don't feel that the lap belts that are in my 87 & 86 vans are so unsafe that they can't ride in it. They might not be perfect, but they are a lot better than none at all.
