You may be in luck.

When I had my last auto repair shop in the early '80's, I bought and
"built" a Heathkit exhaust gas analyzer "kit", and it worked wonderfully
for me since those were the days of carbs.

I'll bet you could find one on ebay or at an electronics swap meet or
some such.

I also bought and my dad built, one of their very, very, cool engine
analyzer (scope) "kits". It did MORE than the Sun scope that cost
thousands more, I'll bet a few of those are around as well. One can
diagnose almost **every ** engine malady imaginable once one learned how
to "read" the scope traces.

It was awesome, and saved me much money, and time. A serious auto
hobbyist would love one of them.
