Entity Marc Perdue spoke thus:

Why? You are the lucky one. All evidence is that the dealer is responsible for the blowup and you will get a replaced engine, probably a better one.

The unlucky owner would have merely had an overheating incident, the van would have been doctored up to run well enough to give it back to the owner and 12 months later it would be burning oil to beat the band.

I bought a totaled Volvo several years ago with a rebuilt diesel engine. The owner had Pep Boys install a new battery, but on the way home the engine burned up because the kid forgot to connect the coolant hose. So Pep Boys paid $3,000 for a rebuild.

The moral of the story is, if it's burning up as you're driving home from the dealer keep driving until it's unrepairable.
