Pulled the tranny out of my newly aquired '84 Westy; and oh what a mess. The clutch bellhousing was totally drenched with oil sludge and crust. Guess this would explain why the clutch was slipping!!! Looks like it was coming from the tranny side rather than the engine; and it's apparently been going on quite a while. Not only that, it's also leaked a lot from the seal where the gear selector pivot goes into the case, and a little bit from around the drive plates the CVs bolt to.

Makes me wonder how long it's been run with little oil, and whether the thing's been cooked. Only problem I'd noticed in the few miles I'd driven it is 1st gear is hard to find, way over towards R vs where it should be. I'd assumed this was just a linkage adjustment issue, though.

I'm thinking new clutch kit / pilot bearing / input shaft seal / seal for gear selector mechanism lever, and hope for the best. Sound like a good course? Anything else to replace while it's out?

-Robert "utter novice" mechanic but getting close to being a "half-time" mechanic since I bought the Westy :)
