Thanks, Z, but due to a suggestion from Daryl (AA Transaxle) I used a screwdriver with the blade bent over 90° to get behind it and just pull it out. Mike
You're trying to move the sleeve in the wrong direction. You need to pull it, not push it. You can grab it with a pair of pliers, as the tranny oil makes it slippery. Also, since it is just a sleeve and nothing runs on it, if you make any slight indentions in it with the pliers it will not matter.
