Simply get the factory tool to remove the large pinion retaining nut. Warning...they are on there tight for a reason...to help hold the bearing secure in the case. Or you can try to use a chisel and destroy it on removal. Apart is one thing...Getting it all back together is a bit tougher without some experience or a lot of luck and some help...Daryl of AA Transaxle ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Scheckel" <jscheckel@NUTLEY.COM> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Sent: Thursday, June 17, 2004 11:43 AM Subject: transmission disassembly

All; the recent thread pertaining to the removal of the input shaft got me wondering how to take apart the entire trans. I have a question about removing the rear part of the case to expose and remove the gear set. I gave away my Bentley book with the sale of my van therefore can' t look up the info myself.

So the question is; how does one remove the rear case and gear set? I have the differential and input shaft removed as well as the bell housing and forward case where the motor mount is secured. Can anyone shed some light on this?

TIA; john
