Subject: DIESEL question about big-nose crankshaft compatibility.

VW diesels had two types of crankshafts, as far as I know.

One is the "regular" type proper for the vanagon where a main journal steps down to a seal journal, which in turn steps down to a smaller segment on which the front drive pulley bolts. It has a woodruff key.

I have recently gotten what is called the "big-nose" version crank--it doesn't have the final step for the pulley or a woodruff keyslot. Instead, the drive pulley mounts over the end of the seal journal, and there is a squarish keyway cut into the front of it.

Does anyone know if I can use this big-nosed crank in place of my original if I replace the front pulley with the matching type, and if so does anyone out there have the matching type?

Thanks,

Jim
