When warmed up, mine runs a needle's width above the LED *minimum*, up to about ¾ scale maximum. I've put 20K miles on a Tiico conversion, but the old boxer behaved exactly the same...it was yanked at approximately 165K miles.

According to my '89 owner's manual, it's perfectly acceptable to run within this range: "When the engine is working hard and in stop-and-go-traffic or in hot weather, the needle can show a very high temperature, but this is not serious as long as the warning light does not flash".
