You raise a very good point about the 2.0L I4!

http://www.fastforward.ca/vanagonswap/ABA/2L.jpg shows a torque and horsepower comparison between the 2.0L I4 an the 1.9/2.1 WBX.

Torque wise the 2.0L I4 is a good match for the 2.1L wasserboxer - a tad less toque on the bottom end and a tad more on the top - basically the same torque as a 2.1L wbx

Power wise there is an improvement on the 2.0L *above* 2000 RPM and you need to get above 3000 RPM to get significantly more power - unless you are passing in 3rd gear you won't be using that power.

I love the TDI in the Vanagon as there is more power and more torque where you need it than the wasserboxer. See:

The TDI walks all over the 1.9/2.1L wasserboxer in the torque department - torque is really what keeps our vans moving - especially up hills!

Power wise the TDI has more useful horsepower than the wasserboxer - at least until 3800 RPM where the power will then quickly drop off. Driving in hilly BC with a TDI is a joy - basically leave it in 4th gear and drive - you can conquer almost any hill in 4th gear now!

Another good side effect of the Diesel is that you get better fuel economy (30mpg) and it is cheaper fuel. Last trip to WA state it was $1.99 a gallon for Diesel and about $2.30 a gallon for 87 octane and close to $2.50 a gallon for premium!

I'm not considering a conversion but have been reading many kits and options. Everyone talks about how much torque is in the slow 1.9L and 2.1L Vw engines and there are many reasons to want a better (bigger) engine. How can a VW jetta 2.0 engine be a solution? Our 2000 Vw jetta engine is a high revving noisy powerless solution. There is no low end torque and it doesn't even boogie until you get over 3000rpm.

Are the conversion engines geared, camed, injected and managed different to the Vanagon's needs?
