Subject: Hella Yellow Star H4 light bulb report - ecode
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

For those who missed the original Cibie install: http://www.knology.net/~vw/vanagon/lights/

I ordered some Hella Yellow Star H4 light bulbs for my Cibie ecode lights in the 80/70W flavor. My opinion: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

The Yellow Star is supposed to be the "all weather" bulb with a yellow light output. Its magic bulb coating turns your headlights pee-yellow. While that works fine in inclement weather on low beams, it does reduce the light output to below that of a standard 60/55W halogen light bulb. The high beams are simply horrible. I'm sure the Yellow Stars would do fine in the winter when the lower refractivity of the yellow light would benefit you during snow storms, but I can't recommend them for 2-headlight systems because of the very poor high-beam output.

I'm glad I got to keep the 100/55W white halogen light bulbs which were shipped to me initially by a mistake. I'll be ordering some relays soon and will use these high wattage standard bulbs instead.
