I had to buy a whole box of stainless steel staples recently to replace the canvas on my 83 westy. On my model year, the canvas is attached to the pop top by staples, so I only used approx. 400 total. The smallest box cost me $108, so if anyone out there needs only enough to do the job, let me know. 
I'll take $20 + shipping anywhere.
