The shop manual is no good when you have the problem. Read it ahead of time, do the preventative maintenance and enjoy your free time how you see fit.

I don't feel like reading technical manuals, nor do I care to wrench much more than doing oil changes, tune ups and comfort mods. I just want to drive and camp, but my ride continues to conspire against me. What good's a stupid shop manual when your transmission blows up 115 miles south of the border?
