It just slipped past me! 10 years now on my diesel->gas conversion on my '82 Westy. Did it way back in April/May '94, soon after i joined the Vanagon mailing list.

216,000 miles on the van now, the swap was done when the van had around 95,000 miles on it, and the donor engine ('92 1800 digifant) had 20,000 miles.

So... that old I4 has been pushing the brick for around 121,000 miles with hardly a hiccup. And its been doing it with the diesel tranny.

engine repairs that come to mind are:

cam shaft end seal new exhaust manifold (old one was still usable) exh man gasket intake man gasket valve cover gasket crankshaft seal distributor cap spark plugs oil pan gasket fuel lines injectors cleaned homemade bushing in alternator new brushes in alternator thermostat (cooler one, old one still fine) AFM cleaning and carbon track tweeking

hmm, thats all I can think off.

oh, and its been using a K&N filter, synthetic oil (mostly Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntec), and the orange Prestone long life coolant.

its a good innings I think, for both having the van and staying on the list :)

Alistair
