Russelll, glad you like your new (relatively) vehicle. Sounds like you made out like a bandit on your purchase. As for the fuel pump whine, be sure all y our filters and fuel lines are clear of any obstructions. Sounds like your pump may be working against an abnormal head pressure. On some vans, there is a filter on the fuel tank side of the pump as well as on the downstream side. Be sure there is no obstruction in either place. Good luck with finding the problem and fixing it.
