I have an Alpine 8" Type S in a band pass box... It takes up more room than a 12" and really booms sometimes but sometimes is completely missing the note. I don't really like the bandpass box.

This is what I am thinking about doing. Install one 12" Adire Shiva ($125 direct) and a reasonable sub amp (200-400watts). I think the Shiva will perform just fine installed directly in the cabinet under the rear bench/bed, firing forward. Make a protective mesh grill for the back so things don't hit the speaker and a regular grill for the front. Now, some people won't want to cut a huge hole in their bench but who is ever going to take that out once they hear it go thump? The cost is very low and I can simultaneously recover my storage space and get more bass.

The PO muyst have had his cousin's, roommate's, sister's boyfriend put the existing stereo in. I think they may inhaled a bit much paint fumes during that install. There are bare wires, an incorrectly installed second battery and duck tape all over. As soon as some money is available, I have to rework the whole thing. At least it doesn't sound too bad.

Bottom line is: get a really great stereo! Go a little beyond what you think will be adequate. It makes the ride so incredible! I am either cranking my favorite music or just listening to the wind go by...
