On my Syncros I have eventually replaced the Speedometer on all of them due to the odometer failing. Despite the archives having info on repair of some speedometers, it did not apply to any of mine, all of which failed in the same fashion. Namely the spindle that holds the gears in place (and upon which they SPIN) came out of one of its anchor points. While I can push it back in, it quickly comes back out again. The archives talk about super gluing the gears onto the spindle, but this precludes them from spinning, in my opinion.

When I got my latest (just today, though I ordered it last week at the dealer) they told me that there were only 3 in the country (in VW's inventory). Of course that is for the Syncro speedometer which is different than 2 wheel drive Vanagon's speedometer. Still, it looks like we'll be relying on our vendors for more and more parts as the Dealers don't have the parts anymore.
