In February 2000 off-roading in Death Valley I really over-taxed my KYB's, along with much of the undercarriage. The KYB's didn't fail but I did not want push my luck so afterward I replaced them with Bilsteins front and back.

I prefer the Bilsteins much more, although I haven't been on any major death defying runs since then. They seem a tad more firm and have more authority, if that translates to auto speak. The shocks were purchased from the Bus Depot but and I had my independent VW shop install them. It didn't seem like a fun DIY project. I like to tinker but if there is too much sweat involved it's no longer tinkering.

Any listmember opinions on whether or not the Bilsteins are worth the extra money over KYB shocks would be appreciated. My VW mechanic charges about twice as much for the Bilsteins. I'll be getting a front and rear set for my 89 westy.

Thanks,
