Hi Folks,

Just finished retrofitting a manual rack I found in a junkyard for $20 to my
'85 (previously power steering.)

I slid the tie rod ends into their proper holes and torqued to around 25 ft
lbs (Bentley says 22) and it worked right; the cotter pins went right in,
everything appears to be correct.  The only thing is, the tie rod ends just
look like they're sitting high.  Maybe I'm crazy, but should they be more
snug?  Is there a tool necessary to seat them better? Did I miss something?

Hopefully I'm just being paranoid...I'm delirious after pulling a manual
rack, pulling my power rack, and installing the manual rack in just under
four hours.

Oh--and I did get the cool gigantic steering wheel, too.  I can see the
gauges without leaning down now!

PS:  there are two Vanagons that just arrived at Colorado Auto Salvage on W.
Ratcliffe in Englewood...One is an 83.5 (red and white with butterflies
painted all over it, now missing its steering rack, afm, and other various
parts) and an '82.  One of the yard guys told me they're going to the
crusher soon...
