Tahquamenon Falls State Park http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails/ParksandTrailsInfo.asp?id=428 and Whitefish point are two definites. Mackinac island is an interesting place to visit as well.

I'd try to camp at the state park near Tahquamenon falls. It is beautiful with lots of old growth and the trails take you through forests full of green giants. My first real camping trip in the Camel, that was 4 years ago, took me from AL to Detroit and up to UP in two days. I actually went for a swim in lake Michigan, but would not dare to dip into lake Superior near Whitefish Point. Sault Ste. Marie is good to visit with the docks and ship museums.

Good luck and take lots of pictures!
