Entity Chris S. spoke thus:

> The squeaking was actually a high-pitched resonance from the > pads vibrating inside the calipers. No way, it's oscillation, plain and simple. Nothing is resonating (unless it's your eardrums resonating to the frequency of the oscillation).

The leading edge of the shoe is dragging the disc and getting pulled in. When it gets pulled in far enough it pops out and oscillates again. That's why the uneven wear.

Nope, the "goop" is like a semipermanent lubricant preventing shear resistance between the piston and shoe. Without that resistance it can't oscillate. Without oscillation the uneven wear stops too. Sometimes the polymer wears off after 10k miles or so and soon you have squeaking again.

I know all this because I used to have a Volvo that did it. (they're notorious)
