Not as common as the 3-4 slider hub but up there with maybe pinion bearings. Unfortunately, it is a combination of design and quality that cause a fatige failure at the point where the drive hub is welded to the gear. I had it hapeen to my trans twice (only 40K on the 2nd one), I'm repairing one now, This is probably what happened to Larry, etc. Unfortunatley depending on how it breaks, the failure causes other damage such as wiping the main bearing, pulling the snap ring out its groove, and sometimes destroying the gear carrier housing.
