We did US1 between SF and Mendocino in our first Westy trip 8 years ago, and it was one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip. Highly recommend the Pt Reyes National Seahore park, but there is(was) no vehicle camping within. We stayed at the nearest site to the park - I don't recall the name, but it was mentioned here recently. It also was the first gas stop after leaving Sausalito, which is quite a long way, so fill up before starting US1!
