Tobin -

VW# 253-070-918 G, Westfaliawerke # 900 010 637 142 Size is 6x16mm in length. The 10mm hex nut is 6mm thread for this bolt Trivial Note: The carriage head is colored "Toscana Beige" and is used thru 1984. The same bolt, but in different head colors from 1985 are:

253-070-908 C - Pastel White 253-070-908 D - Hazel Nut Brown 253-070-908 E - Desert Beige

The plastic "dressing" cap which goes over the nut after securing is 255-070-909 A, only color available now is Black.

As to locating where a carriage bolt of this size can be located, off the top of my head I just don't know, but I'll check some long-time sources of my own tomorrow and see what I can come up with, maybe I can help.
