That is not normal.  Chirping is metal on metal rubbing in my experience.  Check your mounts to ensure the mountings are are tight.  Your mounts also may be weak causing excessive engine movement leading to the the rubbing.

For a long time now (and I guess I'm just used to it) I have had a
slight but consistent chirping (think: baby chickens) noise coming from
the engine compartment. I assume it to be an engine mount, because i
only hear it when the engine is running less than smoothly. When
accelerating on a smooth roadway, it does not occur.

Question is, is this common? I have never been in any other Vanagon, so
I personally don't know. Also, is this something that can be fixed
easily. I searched the archives, but saw nothing describing this
problem.
