In the 1970s Alabama used to post diamond signs painted pale white on the sides of roads where there was a fatality. The signs just read "DEATH" and they were placed on tripods on the sides of highways. I suppose the old Highway Department just wanted to make some kind of an impact on those using the highways. Not exactly a memorial, but effective. As a teenager I bicycled many trips between Atlanta and Huntsville and these signs actually used to scare me. Donald Baxter
