The numbers that Calle quotes just happen to coincide with the max power
numbers of the common European engines VW used on those models. Imagine
that, VW says officially that their trannys will only support engines of
the power ratings VW themselves made for those models.
I'd say their self serving numbers mean little or nothing. What are the
experiences of people who have greatly exceeded their numbers? There are
Subaru 3.3 liter 6 cylinder engines running a growing number of Vanagons
and Syncros. These have nearly DOUBLE the max power that Calle says VW
allows for. Do the trannys blow up regularly? Not that I know of. The
stock 2.6 5 cyl VW engines used in South African models also exceed the
numbers VW gave Sweden as limits.
