a number of good and patient responses so far. slightly off the topic, but
here is an additional point having to do with safety:

any time an electric current is stopped abruptly by unplugging or flipping
a switch, there will be a spark. similar comments apply to starting a
current abruptly, although this is often less of a problem. therefore,
making and breaking a circuit in the presence of atomized gasoline is an
explosion/fire hazard. parenthetically, this is why it is dangerous
switching lights on or off in a room where there is a natural gas/air
mixture.
