Hi Steve,

Well, I guess I'm a proper right-coaster - I mean easterner - because I'm pretty psyched whenever I see anything resembling a bus, Vanagon, etc. And let me tell you, Cairo is just the right place to be! Lovely old buses meandering through the crazy traffic every place you look. I haven't seen any vanagons, though. People here don't have such new vehicles as that. (One of the guys I'm working with was really excited, because he'd replaced his 1975 Fiat with a modern new 1985 of the same model.) But there are lots of charming old air-cooled buses with big round eyes peering through the Cairo pollution (which is legendary, due to all the ancient - and definitely not maintained - vehicles on the road).

Of course most buses and vans here are air-cooled - everyone leaves the engine doors open to let the hot breeze blow through as they drive.

FWIW there are MILLIONS of bugs here, too. Quite a few horses and donkeys, too. Probably as old as the VWs, poor things.

Joy
