Thanks very much for the clear description and excellent points of advise. I will pick up a kit and a thermostat this weekend... or next, depending on what the wife allows :)

This is exactly what I needed but were a'scared to ask

Run some NON ACID radiator flush (tee not connected to garden hose) until warm then cool off.. Start the water flow with the pressure cap off (Important). Then run the engine with the garden hose running. "
