Ah, that's bad luck!

I hate diesel soot too. Especially at oilchange time!

New European diesels now have catalytic converters.

I'm sure it is sulfur. Highly toxic too when burned, as well as acrid. Wre have high-sulfur distillate hee too, and lots of smoky diesels (Nissans seem to be the worst offenders).
