I think it is a personal choice and very dependent on where you are.  We
have stayed at many rest areas across the country, but generally just for a
few hours for a quick nap.  But, we also travel with two 100 pound dogs that
would freak out with anyone approaching the vehicle.  There are lots of
horror stories out there though that keep us very leary of doing it very
often.  Use your common sense and be aware.  From memory, I seem to remember
more problems with east coast highways as opposed to the west.  But, large
expansive Indian Reservations do pose some problems out here in Colorado and
Arizona.  (And that is speaking from experience!)

Hi gang,

         We're Canadians who do a fair bit of camping in the US. While
cruising the Interestates I keep seeing the 'Rest Areas' with trucks and
RV's in them. Are these safe to camp in?? It looks tempting but some
cautious part of me has always held back from actually pulling in and
going to sleep. Any and all comments welcome.
