I purchased a prestone Flush and fill kit for my vanagon. It includes a tee fitting, with cap, that should be placed in the inlet line to the heater, the tee then connects to a garden hose, and includes an antiback flow device (to prevent coolant from entering your hose)

On my 86 Vanagon, I installed the tee near the starter motor on the heater inlet line. with the tee Not connected to the garden hose, I ran some NON ACID radiator flush until the engine was warm, them let it cool off, and hook up the garden hose to the tee, and start the water flow with the pressure cap off (Important, as many municaple water systems have much higher pressure than your pressure cap, and the flow rate from the hose can over pressure you system (cause hoses to bulge) Then run the engine with the garden hose running, this will remove all the flush chemical. (Use NON ACID flush, else heads might be harmed) works great!
