I just shipped a couple trannies to Daryl in Seattle.

I used a pallet and secured them with cheap 6' tie-down straps with metal buckles. I bought them from Home Depot for about $6 per pair. I then built a housing of particle board and attacked it to the pallet. If I were only shipping one, I wouldn't have bothered with the housing. No matter how you package it, be sure it's entirely empty of fluids.
