I seem to recall that there were folded tabs.

Both these parts wear in thickness, wear should be visible.  If the wiper
got caught in the torn ring and crumpled, maybe easier to replace than repair.

The ring can be repaired by silver-brazing on a circle formed from "bronze"
brazing rod and flattening the top surface.  Should be good for 100 years
or so...
