Subject: Friends on the road - coolant leak - need some advice

A good friend of mine is in the road in Whistler BC in his 89 Westy (no, this isn't one of those "my friend has this problem" stories :). He called me tonight from camp and it seems as if he's got a leak from the sensor on the coolant res (not the overflow). I'm guessing it is just an o-ring fix, but I'm thinking he'll need to replace the sensor just to be sure it hasn't been sacrificed. He's going to be in the area a couple of more days, but the res leaks out an inch or two of coolant and then stops. Here are my questions, in no particular order.

1) Any problems driving around like this for a few days? I told him to just keep adding water to the expansion tank and it should be ok...but I wondered if air could get into the radiator and cause some hot times.

2) He has to drive through Vancouver and Seattle (or at least around it) to get back to SLC. Any list vendors or list nice guys have these parts in stock so he could just pick them up and be on his way (oring and sensor)?

3) If no one up there has the parts (at least on the list) does anyone have a good recommended shop I could call and order the parts so he can pic them up in few days?

4) Could it be something besides the o-ring? Possibly a crack in the tank (I've had one of those....).

Thanks,

-Phil 89 Westy SLC UT....

I just got my list stickers yesterday....they go on before the next trip!!
