Two methods I've used in the past:

1 - A small Easy-Out or similar bolt extractor

2 - A left hand drill (be carefull you don't damage the threads)

I soak them with pen fluid then put a wrench (6pt!) on that fits. Then with
a small hammer (a big one is my 4lb) I tap tap tap. I keep on tapping until
it comes loose or I get tired. If tired I soak it again., then take up the
tapping. I have spend as long as 5 min tapping before I got tired.
Note.... this is not a VW specific procedure
