David -

Depending on the year, between 18 to 20 carriage bolts are required, all the same size, 6mm dia, 1.0 thread, 16mm in length (I'm sure 15mm would be acceptable if that's the only close enough length available - most aftermarket suppliers deal in 5mm length increments, but there are exceptions to this rule).

In a previous post I listed that various part numbers that VW had available (updated since then):

VW# 253-070-918 G (Fiche says J or G, depending on where you look) Trivial Note: The carriage head is colored "Toscana Beige" and is used thru 1984. The same bolt, but in different head colors from 1985 are:

253-070-908 C - Pastel White (255-070-908 F in ETKA) 253-070-908 D - Hazel Nut Brown 253-070-908 E - Desert Beige

I think VW only offers the 253-070-908 F as a "generic" replacement these days. But stainless would be a great way to go.

I am getting my van ready for a paint job and want to replace all the pop top bolts with Stainless, I found this vendor online who carries Metric Stainless Carriage bolts, does anyone have a list of all the number and size of all the pop top bolts? That would speed this process along.
