Hi All-
Please humor me for a few minutes as I revisit a topic
form about a month ago, I've been anticipating this
post for about three weeks and 6000 miles.
Just returned back to Central Ohio from a two week
roadtrip to California Coast with my 84 Westy and
female co-pilot.
Without incident (and air conditioning!!) we traveled
west via US 80 down 75 through Denver, and over to
Bishop, CA to meet up with friends from Ohio who had
flown out and rented a California Campers 88 Westy.
From there we spent a few days "Hot-springing" in the
Sierras then headed north to Sonoma/Napa for a 25th
anniversay party at a Friend's Vineyard. From North
of San Francisco we traveled down Rt.1!! Wow, glad I
had new tires. Departed our friends (and their rented
Westy) near Big Sur and headed east through Santa Fe,
NM. Headed home via 44 to 70, back into Columbus.
Round trip milage was 6025, that's about 465 miles per
day! (We ran at about 70-80mph on the highways!)
This is the nutshell verson of two weeks of adventure.
We had no issues with the 84 Westy, much to the
surprise of my friends and family. Our friends'
rented westy ended up having a thermostat problem,
which California Campers quickly remedied by driving
two hours to switch out westys (I wasn't there or I
would have fixed it, smile).
We were fortunate to meet some great people and see
some incredible sights, nothing like waking up with
the Pacific Ocean just meters away. Nice to know that
minus the huge RVs on the road there is a very
comfortable, casual way to explore the country. There
is something about the freedom of being able to really
explore, not worrying about electric/water hook-ups,
will my vehicle fit or being too far from a Motel.
Can't imagine traveling any other way, its gotta be
the Westy way.
So to add a little cheer to the Hospital scene, it's
great to think that such adventures can be had in a 20
year old vehicle!
Time to change the oil and rotate the tires... and
look for a way to add an airconditioning unit.
Tyler
