Do it. Don't mess around with jury-rigging something that almost certainly won't work. Steel stock lids must be available in wrecking yards. I believe all aircooleds and diesels had them.

...I have a '92 Wasserboxer, one of the last ever made in Graz, Austria and it has the steel engine lid. All other T3s in Oz I have ever seen also have a steel engine lid.

Is it possible the plastic lid is a Nth American only thing..? (along with poorer headlamps - the rest of us didn't get them either....)

If metal lids are hard to find in the US, I'm sure I can find a few here cheaply...if shipping costs didn't sour the deal....
