Thanks for the replies/suggestions. I'm thinking of getting/making a
couple of "permanent" brackets, like those used on some Shady-Boy
installations. See copy of picture at

Is there anything to worry about before drilling holes in the vanagon
metal roof? It looks like leaks would be no real problem, since the
bolts/holes are covered when the poptop is down. I'm hoping there's no
wires etc to worry about??
I don't particularly like the thought of those common temporary
brackets...when I got my van alot of paint was knocked off of the
gutters in the 2 locations where those brackets were clamped on...with
associated rust  :)
