not to gloat, but when i noticed our '84 vanagon temperature gauge reading low, and subsequently discovered poor electrical bonding between upper thermostat housing and block (measured about 1200 ohm with digital meter), i surmized that threads were corroded and fixed the problem in 10 minutes using a jumper wire with allegator clips.
