Clutch may not be releasing or pilot bearing is trying to seize to input shaft. Turn engine off. Can the gears be engaged without it running? Place in 1st, start engine while in gear with clutch depressed. If van starts to move then clutch or pilot bearing is the problem.

Before I tow my Westy somewhere and pay for this service - I was hoping the list could help me out in determining whether my transmission is toast...

Background: '86 Westy, 160k kilometres (100k miles), 4spd - and up till now - no transmission issues at all.

The situation:

Driving home from out of town yesterday - everything was going fine. Van was happily chugging along at 100 kmph - no worries.

I slow down and downshift into 3rd to take an on-ramp for an overpass. Again no problems.

At the top of the on-ramp, I speed up and shift into 4th. Except the transmission does not want to go into 4th, try to put it back into 3rd - but it doesn't want to go there either. I play around with it a bit, use some muscle - and eventually get it into 4th. Drives fine.

I am seriously worried at this point, but the van is driving fine - no clanking and other weird noises. I drive home, avoiding a full stop the entire way. I end the trip in 2nd.

Once at home, I try first and reverse. They engage, but when I try to move the van, both gears seem to grind, causing the van to shutter. At this point, 3rd and 4th will NOT engage at all.

I am fully assuming a toast transmission at this point (as per my earlier post- looking for another trans...). I am up for suggestions on how to fully diagnose the situation.

Thanks, Andrew
