Jason, so what LED did you try? You said blue, but then you said the ones you got at Radio Shack were infrared? Infrared LEDs don't put out any VISIBLE light... they are used mostly for things like TV remote controls and stuff.

If you get a blue LED it should works just fine. I put a blue LED on my panel and it's great. Remember that LED's have polarity, so you need to hook it up in the right direction. One lead will be a bit longer than the other, and that's the anode, which will go to the positive side of the circuit.
