I operate on the theory that it's a fluid & should be replaced SOMETIME. That being said, if the fluid looks ok, I don't go out of my way to change it. I recently replaced quite a bit of the fluid with new ATF just because I was moving the reservoir's mount point around & replacing a hose... no problems with the ATF over about 5 months of occasional use. I'll be putting more ATF in today, because I didn't like where I put the reservoir last time & I'm moving it again. :) For comparison, I've only replaced the fluid on one other car we've owned (and we've owned mostly older cars)- an '88 Cabby when I swapped in a 16V & other stuff. It's doing fine on the ATF as well- about 2 years now- but it's being sold for other reasons.
