Subject: Aftermarket cruise control speed sensor
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed

I'm working on installing an aftermarket cruise control in my '86 w/ AT. I've had this unit for years. First it was on a 79 scirocco for a couple of years, then on an 85 GTi for the 10 years I owned it. Both of those were manual transmission, so the unit just relied on the tach signal to keep the rpms constant. This won't work on the AT due to the slip in the torque converter. I actually have had some success using it, but only up around 4100 rpms where I don't like to cruise. Even so it sometimes goes into surging and then disengages because it thinks something weird is going on. And it is right.

I still have the original manual for the unit. It talks about a speed sensor kit, but gives no details as to what exactly that contains. The unit was sold at my FLAPS under the Dana brand name, I guess I bought it in the late 80's. My question is what kind of signal is it looking for from the speed sensor?

Thanks for any input.

Edward
