It's very important that people realize that driving is not a cavalier activity. Our physical environment suffers because traffic engineers are trying to find ways to work around the attitude that car accidents, speeding, and wreckless driving is inevitable. Common sense saves our lives, the environment and could hopefully put the junk science of traffic engineering to bed. More pavement, straighter roads, more engineering are not always the answer and they have their own costs (I drive of course, but I also cycle, spend a lot of time on foot, and think that more pavement kills our communities). It's always a tragedy when something like this happens--don't get me wrong. But I think that frequently people who wouldn't live next to a toxic waste dump, don't smoke, and are generally otherwise cautious with their lives forget all caution when they get behind the wheel. It just doesn't make sense. Slow down--you'll get there.
